Hunter-Reay was the leader at lap 190. In the past six of the last eight races, the leader at lap 190 failed to win the race.
He celebrated in victory lane with his wife and son. He will drink the victor’s milk and receive the Borg-Warner trophy, as well.
Helio Castroneves was looking to become the fourth driver to win the Indy 500 for the fourth time. He finished in second place.
“That was all new,” Hunter-Reay added of the drivers behind him. “They were all doing something new than they were previously. I was lucky to hold onto the lead at the end”
Castroneves hasn’t won an Indianapolis 500 since 2009.
“I wanted to give this to Roger (Penske) so bad,” Castroneves said. “It’s good, but second sucks.”
Marco Andretti finished in third place. Carlos Munoz (rookie) finished in fourth place.
