Englishtown, NJ – Six years ago, there was a tragic event at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park that took the life of Scott Kalitta.

The NHRA SummerNationals is a tough event for those that knew Kalitta. In a touching move, today’s Funny Car winner gave the Wally to Kalitta’s father Connie.

Connie is the owner of Kalitta Motorsports, and just last night, the drivers got together to have a gathering in the pits to celebrate the life of the driver that was killed in a horrific crash at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Cruz Pedregon gave Connie the Wally in honor of his son in a touching move. He was questioned why he went to the winner’s circle and media center without the Wally.

“I felt compelled to hand Connie [Kalitta] the trophy,” Pedregon said. “I wanted to do this and felt this was the right thing to do.”

Pedregon defeated Del Worsham for his first win of the season. This is his third win at Englishtown after being the No. 1 qualifier.

Worsham was driving the Funny Car that the late Kalitta used to drive. He was also making his first final round appearance at Englishtown since the 2011 season when he was driving a Top Fuel dragster for Al-Anabi Racing.

This event was also Pedregon’s 500th round win, and his 35th win overall. He is now tied with Don Prudhomme and will surpass his hero with his next win.

“Prudhomme is my hero, and it means a lot [to tie him],” Pedregon said.
