The San Antonio Spurs are getting ready for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is focused on the rest of the Finals before he will announce his assistant coaches.
Currently, Jim Boylen, Ime Udoka, Chip Engelland, Chad Forcier, and Sean Marks are assistant coaches.
Last off-season, two of Pop’s assistant coaches received head coaching positions. Brett Brown was hired by the Philadelphia 76ers and Mike Budenholzer was named the Atlanta Hawks head coach.

According to a report, the Spurs are expected to hire European legend Ettore Messina to be an assistant coach next season. Daniele Labanti of Corriere di Bologna was the first to report this, which has since been confirmed by multiple sources.
Messina is currently the head coach of CSKA Moscow and is considered one of the top European coaches. He has previously served as a consultant in the NBA.
He served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2011-12 season for head coach Mike Brown. That was his only experience in the NBA, and reportedly complained about the schedule.
While he did not work for Brown’s style of coaching, he is expected to be a fit for the Spurs. San Antonio is made up of the majority of foreign players.
He has been the CSKA Moscow head coach for the past three years. He also coached Real Madrid for two years, after serving as CSKA Moscow’s head coach for the first time from 2005 through 2009.

He also served as the Benetton Treviso head coach from 2002 through 2005. He has also served as a coach with Italy’s National Basketball team and Virtus Bologna from 1989 through 2002.
He is a four-time Euroleague champion, winning in 1998, 2001, 2006, and 2008. He also won the Italian League four times in 1993, 1998, 2001, and 2003.
