New York Rangers center Brad Richards is about to be bought out by the team. A few days ago, his agent thought Richards was going to stay with the team.

Being bought out, the Rangers will rid his contract of being a cap hit later on.

“Gut feeling, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s kept,” his agent, Pat Morris said. “Glen was pretty positive about Brad’s role this season, especially after [former Rangers captain Ryan] Callahan left.”

As Capgeek is reporting, Richards will be moving on. The Rangers will no longer have to pay him the $8.5 million he was owed in 2014-15 and 2015-16, or the $1 million in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

While the Rangers will not have to pay all this money, they will face salary cap ramifications moving forward from doing this deal.

This season, he scored 20 goals and had 31 points in 82 games. Just last Friday, he played in what could be his final game with the Rangers in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Los Angeles Kings.

This was Richards’s third season with the Rangers. He played the previous four years before that with the Dallas Stars and began his career with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he played his first six years.

At press time, we do not know his next move. It would be his fourth team if he stays at the NHL level.

He previously began his career with the Lighting, where he played from 2000-01 through 2007-08. Then, he spent four seasons with the Stars.

He played for the Stars from 2007-08 through the 2010-11 season. His first season with the Rangers was during the 2011-12 season.
