The Cardinals were also interested in Peavy before he was dealt to the Red Sox last summer. He is owed $7 million for the rest of this season.

With his high salary, the Cards may not have to send a top-level prospect back to the Red Sox should a deal be made. This season, he has struggled with a 1-7 record with a 4.64 ERA in 110.2 innings.

He last pitched on Sunday at Fenway Park against the Baltimore Orioles. He went 6 innings and allowed one earned run with a 1.50 ERA.

He has a 132-98 record with a 3.52 ERA in 1,945 innings with the San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, and the Red Sox.

The 33-year-old has pitched in more than 100 innings each year except for his rookie season. As a rookie in 2002, he only pitched in 97.2 innings with the Padres.

The Cardinals are already without three starting pitchers. Joe Kelly, who will be eligible to return on July 11th, has been nursing a hamstring injury.

Jaime Garcia is already expected to come back for the 2015 season. Michael Wacha is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that could cost him the rest of the season.
