The San Antonio Spurs have officially hired Ettore Messina as an assistant coach. He is bringing more than 25 years of coaching to the Spurs, according to the press release.
Messina is a four-time Euroleague Champion. He is also a two-time Euroleague Coach of the Year.

“I am honored to have such an accomplished individual join our program,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said. “Coach Messina is an exceptional coach, a great leader, and someone we can all learn from.”

We previously reported that Messina was expected to become a Spurs assistant coach. This news came during the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.
He has been the CSKA Moscow head coach in the Russian League for the past two seasons. He was in his second stint with the team.
In 2013-14, Messina guided his team to a 22-9 record in 31 games. The team advanced to the playoffs, before losing in the EuroLeague Semifinals.
One year earlier, he guided his team to a 21-5 record in 2012-13. The team also made the playoffs before losing in the EuroLeague Semifinals.
Before joining CSKA Moscow, he was a coaching consultant with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2011-12 season. He also spent two seasons as the head coach for Real Madrid.
During the 2010-11 season, he guided the team to an 11-5 record before resigning. He also guided the team to a 12-8 record during the 2009-10 season before losing in the quarterfinals in the playoffs.
Messina also served as the head coach of CSKA Moscow for the first time for four years, Treviso, and Virtus Bologna. He was the Virtus Bologna head coach for six seasons.
His team won the EuroLeague Championship twice. The team won the championship in 1997-98 and again in 2000-01.
After losing in the EuroLeague Final in 2002, he left to become the Treviso head coach. He was their head coach for three seasons.
Messina became the CSKA Moscow head coach in 2005. He guided the team for four seasons, including two EuroLeague Championships.

The team won the EuroLeague Championship in 2005-06 and again in 2007-08.
He also was the Italian National Team head coach from 1992 through 1997. He also was the Virtus Bologna head coach from 1989 through 1993.
He was also an assistant coach from 1976 through 1989 with Reyer Venezia, Basket Mestre, A.P.U. Udine, and Virtus Bologna.
