Major League Soccer has received its biggest win in their annual All-Star competition.
The MLS All-Stars were able to defeat FC Bayern Munich, 2-1, tonight at the Portland Timbers home facility. This was the MLS All-Stars first win since 2012 when they defeated Chelsea FC 3-2 in Philadelphia.
The ball went through Neuer’s legs to give Donovan his sixth goal in an All-Star game. In 12 appearances, he now leads with six goals.
It would be announced following the win that Donovan was named the game’s MVP.
“It was a lot of fun,” Donovan said. “Portland has been incredible this week. I’m proud that I played and I’m proud that we won”
Following Donovan’s goal in the 70th minute, MLS All-Star head coach Caleb Porter decided to take him out of the game. He was be replaced by Don Dwyer, as he has another game in less than 48 hours against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Bradley Wright-Phillips left footed a shot from outside the box to the top right corner to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 8th minute, Munich took a 1-0 lead when Robert Lewandowski right footed a shot from the right side of the box to the top center of the goal.
Porter and the Bayern Munich head coach Pep Guardiola would not shake hands at the end of the match. The Munich coaching staff was mad at Porter, because they felt like the MLS All-Stars were playing too tough in the friendly.
