Openly gay defensive end Michael Sam has been released by the St. Louis Rams. His story may have come to an end with the Rams, but he will likely sign with another team soon.

Sam was beat out by undreafted free agent Ethan Westbrooks, who could play defensive tackle and defensive end. Sam will now have an opportunity to sign elsewhere once 12 noon EST comes tomorrow.

Sam, who was one of the Rams 7th round draft pick in this year’s draft, became the first openly gay NFL prospect, who was drafted. Sam would also win the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at this year’s ESPY Awards this past July.

Sam had the best selling rookie jersey on the NFL website, only trailing Johnny Manziel’s jersey with the Cleveland Browns.

In the preseason, Sam had 10 tackles and 3 sacks. He had 6 tackles in the Rams 14-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins earlier this week.

With Sam now a free agent, the Dallas Cowboys could sign him. They have been linked to Sam in the past.
