The Montreal Canadiens could be without defenseman Alexei Emelin tonight in a rematch with the Buffalo Sabres. Last night, the two teams faced off in Buffalo, and Emelin made a big hit on Sabres forward Brian Gionta.
Evelyn hit Gionta, a former teammate, in the head, and is expected to meet with the NHL Department of Player Safety today. With that said, he could be facing a one or more game suspension causing him to miss today’s game.
At this time, no update has been announced by the NHL. But if the league does suspend him, a press release will be sent out to the media once a decision has been made.
So far this season, the NHL Department of Player Safety has announced nine player suspensions. This has cost 25 man-games lost and $417,626 in player salary lost, as well.
Five of the nine suspensions have come with hits to the head. If Emelin is suspended, he would be the sixth so far just two months into the season.
