The announcement has been made as to who will travel to New York City to participate in the Heisman Trophy festivities this weekend. The finalists were announced on SportsCenter on ESPN2 this evening.

Danny Wuerfful, the winner of the 1996 Heisman Trophy, made the announcement for the Heisman Trust. The Heisman Trophy invites Alabama Crimson Tide’s wide receiver Amari Cooper, Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota, and Wisconsin Badgers running back Melvin Gordon III.

The 2012 ceremony was the last time three finalists were invited to New York City. That year, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel won over Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein and Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o.

This is the first time since the 2010 Heisman Trophy event that an Oregon Duck has been invited to the New York City. LaMichael James was invited in 2010 and finished third with 916 votes behind Cam Newton and Andrew Luck.

Last year, the Crimson Tide had quarterback A.J. McCarron finish second behind Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. Also, Alabama had running back Trent Richardson finished third in 2011 behind Robert Griffin III and Luck.

The 2011 ceremony was also the last time a Wisconsin player was a finalist for the award. That year, Montee Ball finished fourth with 348 votes.

If Mariota, who is the favorite, wins the award this Saturday evening in Manhattan, it would be the first time in 80-years that an Oregon player has won the award.

“If this guy isn’t what the Heisman Trophy is about, I’m in the wrong profession,” Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich said on Friday night after the Ducks won the Pac-12 Championship.

Mariota comes to New York City with 280 of 408 for 4,121 passing yards. He also has 40 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Gordon III comes to the Big Apple with 309 carries for 2,336 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. He also had 17 receptions for 151 yards and three touchdowns.

Cooper has 115 receptions for 1,656 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He also has five carries for 23 yards.
