The Boston Celtics have been rumored to trade point guard Rajon Rondo for quite some time. However, he continues to be in the green and white.

Last night, news broke that the Celtics have been in discussions to trade Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks. The package that would go to Boston would be Brandan Wright, a first-round pick, and multiple other players to make finances work.

The Celtics have also talked to the Los Angeles Lakers, among other teams before likening the Mavericks offer. The Lakers’ offer is centered around point guard Steve Nash.

Nash, who will miss this season, has elected not to retire to receive his money this season. He also has an expiring contract, which would be enticing to the Celtics, but they have a better offer on the table.

Nash is making $9.7 million this season, before being a free agent in the summertime, when he’s expected to retire.

Nash and Rondo can be traded straight up for each other. Since the Celtics are over the cap and have a post-trade Team Salary over the Tax Threshold, the 25% trade rule would be invoked.

The Celtics could not receive more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to work. Also, according to the trade, the Celtics would meet the requirements of the Hard Cap rules by staying under the Tax Threshold plus $4 million for the adjusted post-trade Team Salary.

Plus, the Lakers are in a similar boat, as the 50% trade rule would come into play here, as they would be trading less than $19.6 million in salaries. They could also not receive 150% plus $100,000 or more than $5 million in additional salaries, whichever is lesser, of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted.

Besides Nash, the Lakers are willing to offer the Celtics multiple draft picks, as well.

Rondo had 13 points in his last game with the Celtics. He had the aforementioned 13 points in nearly 33 minutes in a win against the Orlando Magic.

This season, Rondo has averaged 8.3 points per game in 22 starts. He also has had 7.5 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.1 blocks in 31.8 minutes per contest.

At press time, it is not clear how close the Celtics are in their pursuit to trade Rondo.
