Matt Hagan is two-for-two at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. He won the season finale race in November, before adding another wally this evening.
Hagan had to defeat John Force in the final round in November. However, this time around, it was his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps in the final round.
Hagan picked up his first-career Circle K Winternationals wally following a 4.011 run. Capps went 4.078 in a losing effort.
“It’s just crazy,” Hagan stated. “It speaks values about (crew chief) Dickie Venables and this whole team. We got a couple of guys that came off of (Jack) Beckman’s car, and this is their first win ever. And to give them their first wally ever – on our first race together – it’s pretty huge.
Last season, the reigning champion needed 12 races before he picked up his first win of the season. This time around, it was the first race of the season.
Hagan was the No. 12 qualifier, while Capps was the No. 6 qualifier. Hagan is also the points leader following the win.
“I want to dedicate this wally to Don Schumacher. He’s doing radiation and he wasn’t able to make it out here. It breaks my heart, because he gives so much to this sport. We couldn’t do anything without that guy.”
This is Hagan’s 15th career win in 145 races.
