Today was the first time that Angelle Sampey was at an NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event since getting hurt last October in Las Vegas. Yet, while she’s still recovering from her freak injury, she’s the provisional No. 1 Pro Stock Motorcycle at the Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals.
Sampey, who was hurt will a rolling service cart ran over her ankle that required stitches, is looking for her first No. 1 qualifying position since returning to the sport late last year. She had a 6.891 run to put her atop the PSM latter at the moment.
“My ankle is about 70% healed,” Sampey added. “I’m still in physical therapy but I am definitely strong enough to ride the bike.”
Behind Sampey is Steve Johnson, whose last win came at this track last year, ran a 6.912. Following those two, 2013 Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion Matt Smith is third with a 6.918 run.
“I needed this for my confidence but I also know that this class is like quicksand,” Sampey added. “Things can slip away quickly.
“I needed this. Last year I was starting to get very discouraged. I just didn’t think that I did a good job.”
