Smith passes Sampey to get the PSM No. 1 qualifier in Florida

Matt Smith was able to top Angelle Sampey for the Pro Stock Motorcycle No. 1 qualifier at the Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals. Smith went 6.847 to surpass Sampey, who is competing in her first event since being hurt in October.

Smith will face off against his wife Angie Smith in the first round.

“I can’t say enough about Victory and debuting the Gunner bike,” Smith added. “For Polaris, it’s an awesome deal for them to step in with NHRA drag racing and to come out and show what we’ve done right off the bat.”

Sampey is second following her 6.872 pass. She’ll face Chaz Kennedy in the first round.

Eddie Krawiec and his Harley-Davidson is third with a 6.873 run. He’ll face Mike Berry in the first round.

Andrew Hines, who is the 2014 champion, went 6.877. He’ll face Scotty Pollacheck in the first round.

Jimmy Underdahl and his Suzuki is fifth after his 6.883 pass. He’ll face Shawn Gann in the first round.
