The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors have a new Athletic Director in David Matlin. He official announcement was made by UH Manoa Chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman at a press conference at Les Murakami Stadium.
His salary will go before the Board of Regents for final approval at a April 16th meeting.
“I believe, during these challenging times for UH Athletics, that David has the proven executive leadership experience, vision and passion to stabilize and grow the program,” Bley-Vroman said. “We were searching for someone with the ability and agility to lead us through this complex and important period in the evolving national collegiate athletics landscape, and I am confident that we have found that person in David.
“I’m deeply appreciative of the tremendous feedback from campus and community members on this critical leadership position. Please join me in welcoming David as he takes the helm of the state’s NCAA Division I women’s and men’s athletics programs and our 21 major sports teams.”
Matlin comes to the school after working for 13-years as the managing individual for the Hawai’i Bowl. He’s also helped with the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and the Hawaiian Islands Invitational.
He also has more than two decades of experience in sports and entertainment marketing, where he’s working on many top events, including the MLB‘s World Series, the 25th Houston Astrodome Anniversary, the Miss Universe Pageant, the NCAA men’s volleyball Final Four, and the NIT Basketball Tournament.
He’s been the Executive Director of the Hawai’i Bowl and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic for the past seven years.
Matlin re-joins the Hawai’i Athletic Department, as he previously spent five-years (1994-1999) working in the ticket office.
