Gas Monkey Garage and Hennen Motorsports are expected to return to the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series later this month at the Royal Purple Raceway near Houston, Texas. This will be their first appearance since Las Vegas last fall.
While Kebin Kinsley has said that the team will be at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals April 24th through the 26th, they are not currently entered into the race, according to the NHRA. They will have until Monday of the race to enter.
Kinsley, the driver of the Top Fuel dragster, said that he is getting a physical this Friday. He said that the NHRA requires all drivers to get a physical every year before competing.
One of the stumbling blocks that this team is facing is that they’re looking for sponsorship. Kinsley said that Rawlings is looking for someone to step up to the plate to help pay the $100,000 to sponsor the car instead of it coming out of his own pocket, like happened last September when the dragster debuted at the Texas Motorplex.
“The problem is that companies have already spent their money for this year,” Kinsley added. “Most companies spend their money in September, so we’ve been working on this since last November when we were at Vegas.”
Once Richard Hennen and Rawlings are able to get a deal done, the goal for Kinsley is to race in 10-12 races a year. Kinsley is hoping that a deal gets done soon, he said, because he’s itching to race.
“I want to be out there, man,” Kinsley stated. “When this is what you do, you want to get going. I’m hoping it gets done soon, so we can finally get out there.”
Kinsley said that when the Top Fuel team is in action, Rawlings is expected to be there supporting the team. One of the races that Kinsley would like the Gas Monkey Garage Top Fuel dragster to attend is at the Toyota NHRA SummerNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ in June.
“That’s on my bucket list,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to go to that race for a very long time.”
