The exit from Duke University continues this morning as another freshman has left the team. Tyus Jones has decided to follow his teammates to the upcoming NBA draft.

Jones averaged 11.8 points, 5.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game in his freshman season. He also becomes the eighth Blue Devils player to enter the draft after just once season.

“Tyus could not have done a better job for us this past year,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “We’re so very happy for him and his family to have the opportunity to declare for the draft. He is projected to be a first-round pick. He’s going to get a lot better, but people have already seen him and know how he handles himself, especially in pressure situations and in the biggest games.”

He said it was a dream come true for him to attend Duke. However, it had to be another dream of his to enter into the league, which he’s going to do in just a few months.

“I knew coming in I would be a part of a great team, but I never envisioned I would be a part of such an incredible family. That is what has made winning a national championship such an amazing experience. I am faced with the tough decision of returning to a place I love or pursuing my next dream,” he said in a statement. “With the support and guidance of my family, my coaches, my teammates and Duke University, I have decided to start my professional career. Even though I am entering the NBA Draft, I will forever be a Duke Blue Devil.”

He joins Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow to leave the team at the moment. Just yesterday, Winslow decided to leave.

Okafor and Winslow are expected to be top five picks, according to numerous mock drafts. Jones is expected to be a first rounder.

According to, Jones is considered to be a Luke Ridnour type of player.

Jones was a three time Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year, as well as the Minnesota Associate Press Player of the Year for the same amount. He was also named Mr. Basketball in 2014.

He was an All-American in High School, and has played for team USA in U-16, U-17, and U-18.
