News started to trickle in that the Philadelphia Phillies and the Texas Rangers are talking about a possible Cole Hamels trade. However, minutes later, those reports were downgraded to ongoing talks, as nothing is imminent.

Now, there is clarification going on, Hamels cannot block a trade to the Rangers, as they are one of the teams that are not on his no-trade clause. He can block a trade to up to 20 teams, which the Rangers are not one of them.

The Rangers are on his approved list, and FOX Sports reporter Jon Morosi said that Hamels would waive his no-trade clause to go to the Rangers. Obviously, that will only happen should a trade happen between the two teams.

While the team is having ongoing talks, there’s no doubt that other teams will surely call general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. about their top pitcher. Hamels has been linked to the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals since the beginning of the season.

As the Phillies continue to struggle, it wouldn’t be surprising if Hamels is finally dealt. But Amaro Jr. has to get top prospects or MLB-ready players in return.

He can’t let what happened to another Phillies ace happen as it did in 2000 when then-GM Ed Wade dealt Curt Schilling to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phillies received first baseman-outfielder Travis Lee along with pitchers Omar Daal, Vicente Padilla, and Nelson Figueroa.

Padilla was the longest-tenured Phillie from this trade at 5 1/2 years, while Figueroa was gone after that season.

With the team struggling, the Phillies must do better when a trade with the 31-year-old left-hander goes down. At this time, it is unclear who the Rangers or any other team would send to Philadelphia in return.

This season in 14 starts, he’s 5-5 with a 2.96 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 94.1 innings. He has 103 strikeouts and 31 walks, while he hasn’t registered a complete game since 2013.
