Al Golden has been fired from his head coaching job with the Miami Hurricanes. The news comes a short time after another Florida team lost its head coach.

UCF, who is 0-8 on the season, saw head coach George O’Leary resign. He took that option like Steve Spurrier than being fired at the end of the season.

Golden’s departure comes on the heels of a 58-0 loss to the Clemson Tigers. They showed more fight in the pre-game when several players got into an argument and had to be broken up than in the game.

“Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community.” said Miami athletic director Blake James in a statement. “However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men.”

During his four-and-half years on campus, he was 32-25 overall. He never finished a season with more than nine wins in a season.

While he led the team to two bowl games, the expectations at this school is to play for national championships. That hasn’t happened in over a decade.

“On behalf of my family I want to thank the University of Miami for a tremendous opportunity,” Golden said. “I believe in what we are doing and how we are doing it and we have some outstanding young men in our football program. Though this moment is difficult, we wish the Canes the best of luck going forward.”

James had announced that assistant coach Larry Scott will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Scott is the team’s tight ends coach before being promoted. The Miami Dolphins made a similar move earlier this month when they fired Joe Philbin and promoted TE coach Dan Campbell for the rest of the season, and they’re 2-0 under him since, including today’s win over the Houston Texans.
