Kyle Flood‘s team knew that they were going to have their hands full with the Ohio State Buckeyes. But on Saturday night, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights were dominated at High Point Solutions Stadium.
The Buckeyes would defeat the Scarlet Knights, 49-7, in Big Ten Conference play. There were 53,111 for the sellout crowd to see the first meeting between the two teams in New Jersey.
Ohio State improved to 8-0 on the season and 4-0 within the conference. Rutgers dropped to 3-4 while being only 1-3 within the conference.

The Buckeyes currently own a 21-game win streak. It’s the best in the nation and they will have a bye week before they play the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Nov. 7.
While many would have focused on stopping Ezekiel Elliott, he isn’t their only weapon on offense. And against the Knights, he wasn’t their top offensive weapon on this evening.
J. T. Barrett, the starting quarterback, accounted for five touchdowns, all within the second and third quarters. He threw for three touchdowns and ran for an additional two.
“J.T. Barrett came in and played very well, energized us,” Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer said.
This was Barrett’s first start on the season after he was serving as the team’s backup to Cardale Jones. Barrett was responsible for 324 yards and outgained the Scarlet Knights by himself.
Jones was benched by Meyer to give Barrett the opportunity in this game.

“I didn’t really feel pressure to know I was going to play well or not,” Barrett added. “It was just letting the game come to me.”
Even Flood had high praise for the dual-treat Barrett. At one time earlier this season, the Buckeyes had to figure out who was going to be their quarterback moving forward.
They had Barrett, Jones, and Braxton Miller at the position, before Miller moved to wide receiver. Barrett hit Miller for a 45-yard pass before Barrett scored on a one-yard touchdown to make it 21-0.
“He is the prototype dual-threat quarterback, and he puts a tremendous amount of stress on your defense whenever he has the football, because he can run it like a running back, and he throws it very well as a quarterback,” Flood said.
Elliott had two rushing touchdowns, including a 55-yard run in the fourth quarter. That gave the Buckeyes a 49-0 lead.
With just 13 seconds left, the Scarlet Knights ensured that they would not be shut out. Hayden Rettig threw a four-yard pass to André Patton for the 49-7 lead.
