In Sports, there always seems to be a power struggle between a head coach and a general manager. It always happens at some point.

The Houston Texans are the latest team to have that issue, as head coach Bill O’Brien and general manager Rick Smith are not seeing eye-to-eye. O’Brien is trying to run the team his way; however, Smith wants him to do it another way.

This comes out after news came to light last night that the head coach wanted to get rid of struggling quarterback Ryan Mallett. He missed the team’s flight on Saturday.

However, Smith doesn’t want him to change the culture. Since he’s being undercut from above, it won’t be surprising if O’Brien decides to leave the team after this season.

He knows how to turn around a program when he has full control. When he was the Penn State Nittany Lions head coach, he quickly turned that program around even admit the school’s scandal following the Jerry Sandusky/Joe Paterno mess.

When he leaves, his name will go to the top of many college football and potential NFL jobs open up. He already has an impressive resume and should be a coveted coach.

One team in the NFL that he should consider is the Tennessee Titans, as Ken Whisenhunt will likely be out at the end of the season. In a year-and-a-half in Nashville, his teams have gone 3-19.

He’s already being questioned for his play-calling. Yet, he’s a career 48-70 coach in eight years in 118 games.

He hasn’t had a winning record since the 2009 season when the Arizona Cardinals went 10-6. They had an 8-8 mark in 2011, and if you eliminate the 2008 and 2009 seasons (19-13), his best season was two 8-8 records with the other in 2007.

The big factor that O’Brien should consider here is rookie Marcus Mariota. He’s projected to be a star in this league, and that’s better than the two guys he currently has as the Texans quarterback.

O’Brien can build around the young quarterback and have a tremendous amount of success moving forward.
