With future Hall of Famer quarterback Peyton Manning out a few more weeks, the Denver Broncos have free agent signal-caller Christian Ponder. His contract is likely until Manning returns.
With Ponder signed, the Broncos now have four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. It’s not clear if they’ll release one or keep all of them.
Ponder, who is 27-years-old, played four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. However, he was the team’s third-string quarterback last season.
He was behind Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel on the depth chart.
He has a career 59.8% completion rate and a 75.9 passer rating.
When he became a free agent in March, he found little interest on the open market. He would sign a contract with the Oakland Raiders.
However, the team would release him before the beginning of the season.
Ponder will be the back-up to starter Brock Osweiler and seventh-round pick Trevor Simian.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapport, he’ll be the team’s third quarterback, while he learns Gary Kubiak’s offense. He could move up to the second quarterback, but that seems unlikely, as the Broncos really like Siemian.
