The Seattle Seahawks will have to make their annual playoff push without Marshawn Lynch. “Beast Mode” had surgery this morning to repair a sports hernia, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Head coach Pete Caroll is hoping that Lynch will be able to return in three to four weeks. The team has decided to keep him on their active roster, in case he’s able to return before the playoffs.

Lynch met with Dr. William Meyers, a noted specialist, in Philadelphia on Monday. He missed the Seahawks game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

With Lynch out of action, rookie Thomas Rawls has stepped up in his place. In addition, the rookie has made the team consider moving on from Lynch, who they acquired in a midseason trade with the Buffalo Bills in 2010.

Lynch has not been effective this season and has taken a lot of pounding in the past few years, as the Seahawks improved into a Super Bowl-winning team. He’s due to make $9 million next season, which the team is not willing to pay at this point.

If he returns before or after Christmas, the team could give him some carries before making the playoffs – if they do make the playoffs at this point. Also, Rawls has proven that he can carry the load for Darrell Bevell’s offense.

So far, Rawls has had two games, where he rushed for more than 160 yards each. The Seahawks could go to a heavy run game offense when Lynch returns, depending on if that’s what Carroll and Bevell want to do that way.

At 5-5, the Seahawks have a slim chance to make the postseason. They’ve had an erratic offense this season and have allowed way too many big plays.
