D.J. Durkin named Maryland Terrapins head coach

The Maryland Terrapins have hired their next head coach, as the team has hired D.J. Durkin. He comes to the school after being the Michigan Wolverines defensive coordinator under head coach Jim Harbaugh.

A few days ago, it was reported that Durkin was ready to sign a contract to become the Terps head coach. He met with school officials on Monday.

He replaces Randy Edsall and Mike Locksley, who was the team’s interim head coach. Edsall got fired by the Terps administration in October.

The Terps finished 3-9 this season. They came back to defeat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday in their final game of the season.

Durkin was in his first year as the Wolverines defensive coordinator. This will be his first full-time head coaching gig for the 37-year-old.

Before arriving at Michigan, he was the Florida Gators interim head coach during their team win over the East Carolina Pirates.

He was with the Gators from 2010 through 2014. He was the team’s linebacker and special teams coach from 2010 through 2012.

Then, he became Florida’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2013 and 2014 under former head coach Will Muschamp.

He also had stops at Stanford, Bowling Green, and Notre Dame. He was a graduate assistant with the Falcons and Fighting Irish, before getting his first full-time job in 2005 with the Falcons.

He joined the Cardinal staff in 2007 as the defensive end and special teams coach.
