Philadelphia Eagles fire Chip Kelly

The Philadelphia Eagles have fired head coach Chip Kelly. The team did not wait until after the final game of the season.

The Kelly experiment as a head coach and a general manager was a bust. He took over the general manager duties from Howie Roseman last January.

The Eagles will have Pat Shurmur as the team’s interim head coach in Week 17. Shurmur was previously the team’s offensive coordinator.

“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,”owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement.

The Eagles lost to the Washington Redskins on Saturday night. With the win, the Redskins won the NFC East and eliminated the Eagles from postseason play.

Kelly’s teams have missed out on postseason play the past two seasons. They made the playoffs before losing to the New Orleans Saints in the first round three years ago.

He was 26-21 in three seasons after leaving the Oregon Ducks. They were 6-9 this season and there’s been player discord throughout Kelly’s tenure. Several of his African-American players have claimed that he was racist.

His two significant moves this past off-season hasn’t worked out like they had hoped. Sam Bradford had an OK season after being acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Rams involving Nick Foles and trade picks.

DeMarco Murray signed to replace LeSean McCoy after he was traded to the Buffalo Bills for Kelly’s former Ducks player Kiko Alonso, but he’s been a complete failure in Kelly’s offense. Whether it was Murray or Kelly’s fault, we’ll never know.

Murray was never the same after playing for Kelly’s offense. Late in the season, he was demoted to the third string back behind Ryan Mathews and Kenjon Barner, another one of Kelly’s former Oregon players on the team.

On the year, Alonso had 22 tackles and an interception. No the numbers one would think he would have after the trade. Murray has 633-yards and five touchdowns on the year, as he’s averaging 45 yards per game – sometimes this season, he hasn’t even gotten that much in games.

They’ve also signed cornerback Byron Maxwell to a long-term deal, and he’s underperformed after joining the team from the Seattle Seahawks‘ Legion of Boom defense.

The team was just 7-12 in their past 19-games. During its two games with Sam Bradford on the sidelines and Mark Sanchez was the quarterback, the team was outscored 90-31.

This season was the Eagles worst since the 4-12 season during Andy Reid’s final campaign in 2013.

Besides Kelly being fired, the team also fired Ed Marynowitz, who was the team’s Vice President of Player Personnel. The team has appointed Tom Donahoe, a longtime NFL executive, as the team’s new Senior Director of Player Personnel.
