The Miami Dolphins have hired their new head coach. His name is not Dan Campbell, the interim head coach, who finished last season after the team fired former head coach Joe Philbin.

The Dolphins have hired Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase. The Bears play-caller signed a five-year contract with the team.

In addition to being the head coach, he’ll also have full control of the team’s roster. He’s also expected to be the play-caller with the Dolphins, as well.

Gase, who has been a hot candidate for the past two off-seasons, elected to take the Dolphins job over the other jobs available. With his hiring, reports are that he’s going to pursue Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph to be his defensive coordinator, depending on how the Bengals do tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild card game.

“It’s going to start with the right people,” he said. “It starts with the players, it also starts up top and we think we have the people in place, who have the passion, the work ethic, and unselfishness we need to compete and be a winning organization.

“We are looking for guys who want to invest in winning. It’s going to be critical that guys come in here day in and day out and understand that’s what we want.”

Gase joined the Bears last off-season after John Fox became the head coach. Fox and Gase also worked together with the Denver Broncos.

In his lone season with the Bears, he helped improve Jay Cutler, who had a career-high 92.3 passer rating. Cutler also threw 11 interceptions compared to the 18 picks during the 2014 season.

He also helped develop rookie running back Jeremy Langford, who did well when veteran Matt Forte was injured. Besides Forte, the Bears also had year-long injuries to Alshon Jeffrey and first-rounder Kevin White, who missed the entire season with an injury.

“We did exhaustive research on all of the candidates ahead of time and conducted thorough and detailed interviews with each person,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. “In the end, I was convinced and the search committee was unanimous Adam was the right leader for our football team who best met all of our priorities.

“He has high energy is competitive and driven to win with a mindset of teaching and developing players.”

With the Dolphins, he’s going to have a huge task to deal with, as he has to fix Ryan Tannehill. His play drastically declined this past season and it has been reported that Philbin did not see Tannehill as the long-term answer.

He reportedly wanted to draft Derek Carr in 2014, before he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders and has become a star.

During the interview process, Gase and Tannehill reportedly met. Gase also met with star defensive player Ndamukong Suh, who has been called a dirty player for a long time.

The Dolphins went fishing and found their guy early in the process. Gase is the first head coach hired in the off-season.

Mike Tannenbaum and new GM Chris Grier saw something in Gase that they acted quickly to get him before anybody else.
