New details has come out as to why San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is reportedly being linked to the New York Jets. Kaepernick’s girlfriend Nessa, who is a host for radio station Hot 97, is based in New York City.
So, by saying that he wants to go to the Jets, it would make him closer to his girlfriend. Right now, they’re doing the long-distance thing, as each are on the other coast and that makes any relationship challenging.
Kaepernick had a forgettable 2015 season that ended when he decided to have shoulder surgery. He had the operation in Colorado and missed the rest of the season, as Blaine Gabbert was given the reigns by former 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula for the rest of the season.
Gabbert was named the starter when Kaepernick was bench midway through the season. However, while Kaepernick may want to leave town, his new head coach Chip Kelly reportedly is very fond of him.
Kelly reportedly wanted to make a trade for Kaepernick last season when Sam Bradford was struggling. He also wanted to go to a team that Kaepernick was apart of when he was looking for employment again.
The new 49ers coach has said that he isn’t allowed to talk to Kaepernick about their future together. However, that’s not true, as they can talk but not involving any football until the league allows them to do so.
The team will have to decide what to do with their signal caller by April 1st when they can either keep him, trade him, or release him. His $11.9 million salary would become guaranteed that day.
If the team decides to release him, they would save $8.5 million. He’s also expected to have a $15.9 million cap hit this upcoming season.
While Kaepernick may say that he’s interested in going to the Jets, the team is reportedly more interested in re-signing free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. He had a career-best season this past season in his first-year with the team after being acquired in a trade with the Houston Texans.
Nessa has been involved with athletes in the past. She was previously involved with Aldon Smith, who was Kaepernick’s former 49ers teammate. She was also rumored to be with Washington Wizards guard John Wall, as well.
This season, his worst since playing three games as a rookie in 2011, he played in just nine games before being replaced midway through the season by Gabbert, a career back-up. He went 144-of-244 for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns to five interceptions.
He also had two 300-yard passing games, which came against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 when he had 335 yards with two touchdowns. He also had a season-high 340 passing yards against the Baltimore Ravens at Levi Stadium, while also throwing two touchdowns.
