It reports are true, the Los Angeles Clippers are interested in a big deal that would shock the NBA, as they’re looking to shake up the current roster. The team has a core group of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan.

But the Clippers are reportedly interested in trading Griffin to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Kevin Durant. The Thunder star is a free agent this summer, and if they were to make this deal, they would get another top player in return.

Also, to make things more complicated, especially for the Clippers is the fact that Griffin was recently involved in a fight with the team’s assistant equipment manager, who is also his friend. He’s expected to be out a month or longer following the fight, which caused him to break his shooting hand.

Yahoo! Sports NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski said that the teams would look into the deal during the summer. It would come through a sign-and-trade, which would allow Durant to make more money in the long run.

“If the opportunity comes to move Blake Griffin and replace him with Durant, the Clippers won’t hesitate,” his source said. “Teams are calling on Griffin trades now, but Clippers president and coach Doc Rivers seems determined to play the year out with Griffin and see how far the team advances in the playoffs.

“Eventually, the Clippers will determine how intrigued Durant might be in becoming a Big Three with Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan.”

Of course, Durant is a much more talented player that would improve any team that he’s on. Griffin is strictly a power forward, who has limited post-up and dunking skills.

Durant is one of the Top Five players in the association and has been for quite some time. Griffin is one of the twenty best players in the league.

If the Thunder move him via a trade, or if he leaves via free agency, their chances to win a championship are greatly diminished, especially with Durant and Russell Westbrook being teamed together. The Thunder are the third-best team in the Western Conference trailing only the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs.

Also, if the teams do make such a deal, it would allow Griffin to go home. He went to the University of Oklahoma with his brother years ago. In addition, it would cause the team to make a corresponding move.

Right now, the Thunder have Steven Adams, Enes Kanter, Nick Collison, and rookie Mitch McGary, who all play the position. Griffin would be added to that mix while bringing limited shooting capabilities.

Collison may not be moved by the team since he’s been with the franchise dating back to when they were the Seattle SuperSonics. Kanter was re-signed by the team in the off-season and would be the most likely guy to go if such a deal is made involving Griffin and Durant.

While the Clippers are in a win-now situation with its current roster. Rivers doesn’t want to waste Paul’s remaining years of his contract, as he’s already 30 years old and is in the prime of his career — and wants the team to contend for championships in the very difficult Western Conference.

It’ll be interesting to see if such a deal is made now or in the summer. Even though the team says they won’t trade Griffin now, it wouldn’t be surprising if a trade is made if they can acquire Durant or be swept off their feet with another top-level player in return.
