Mirra medaled in competitions from 1995 through 2008. In addition, he had 24 medals, including 14 gold medals.
DaveMirra.com mentions that he won his first X Games gold medal during the 1996 X Games. His last gold medal came in 2005.
After that event, he did not finish better than 2nd and DQ’s several times through the X Games events through 2011. In his final X Games event in 2011, he finished fourth.
TMZ Sports is reporting that he was visiting friends in the area when he took his own life. He leaves behind his wife, Lauren, and two daughters.
The gossip website is also reporting that the authorities are investigating his death. Earlier in the day, Mirra posted a photo of him and his wife together with the caption, “My Rock, Thank god!”
Besides being a BMX legend, he was also a Rally Car driver and also hosted two seasons of MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules Challenge.” He also has a bike company as well as was featured on the cover of several BMX video games.
He was also close friends with fellow BMX legend T.J. Lavin, who commented in the TMZ Sports story.
“I just wish he would have called me,” he said. “I would have jumped on a plane in a second. There’s always another way. If anyone needs help, just please get it. I feel sick about this.”
