One day after Calvin Johnson retired from the Detroit Lions and the NFL, the Lions have went out and agreed in principle with the top free agent wide receiver. Marvin Jones is expected to sign with the Lions once the league year starts later Wednesday.
Jones is reportedly going to receive around $8 million per season. He’s expected to become the team’s top receiver, as well.
The Jones signing will make Golden Tate as the complimentary No. 2 receiver on the team. He served in that role with Johnson the past few years after signing with the team in free agency.
The 25-year-old becomes the team’s top wide receiver after the Chicago Bears franchise tagged Alshon Jeffery.
Jones only played in three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He had 15 touchdowns in 43 career games.
This past season, he had 65 receptions for 816 yards and four touchdowns.
While the Lions will have a gaping hole to fill with Johnson retiring, Jones will hope to fill that hole – which will be difficult to fill – as Johnson is one of the best wide receivers of all-time.
Johnson ended his career with six straight 1,000-plus yardage seasons. He had 1,214 yards last season in his final campaign with the team.
