Don’t mess with PGA Tour golfer Ian Poulter. Recently, JJ Downum learned a lesson when he tried to heckle Poulter.
When you use social media, it’s usually on the internet for the whole world to see regardless if you want others to see it or not. Downum, who was an assistant athletic director at Florida Southern College, is now unemployed.
He heckled Poulter and his two million followers. Poulter replied with, “I’m sure @FSC_Athletics and @FscSports are really proud of your professionalism. I wish you the very best Ian,” on Twitter.
Downum wrote Poulter, “@IanJamesPoulter We’re still here swimming circles in your brain …. hit it in the water AGAIN” on Twitter.
On March 12th, 2016 at 1:59 pm, he wrote a message to Poulter saying “Quick story from the Valspar (Valspar Championship) …. Ian Poulter is making the walk from 12 to 13. I yell, “you will NOT make the Ryder Cup team!” Followed by a “YOU WILL HIT IN THE WATER!” Ian turns to a rules official and asks that my friend and I be removed from the premises. We talk to the cops, rules official and they ask us to wait until Ian moves onto the next hole and we could return to the Hooters tent. Ian hit his tee shot on the part 3 into the water, thins we got kicked out and we’re still boozing! I’m swimming circles in Ian Poulter’s brain and might (probably) kept him off the Ryder Cup Team ….. LETS Go!
According to CBSSports.com through The Ledger, “He’s no longer employed at the institution,” Pete Meyer, Florida Southern’s Director of Athletics and Wellness, said.
While this may have been harsh for an individual being fired for making comments on social media, he’s not the only one who lost their job for such comments. Maybe it was worth it to Downum, but the fact is, he’s without a job because of a drunken moment.
