According to ESPN, the Sacramento Kings will fire George Karl after their final game of the season. The Sacramento Bee first reported the news.
The Kings conclude their season on Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets.

“This year has been crazy, but it’s always been rewarding,” Karl, who would not take questions regarding his future, told reporters in Houston. “That’s what coaching is. You never know what hand you’re going to be dealt, even in good times when you’re winning more than what you did last year. You still have nightmares. You still have headaches. You still have ego problems. You still have attitude problems.

“The whole thing about it is solving them and moving on, and this team has never given up and has fought in a pretty impressive way through a lot of turmoil.”
Right now, the team stands at 33-48 on the season. The Kings will not make the playoffs for the second straight season under Karl.
Vlade Divac, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, nearly fired Karl before changing his mind following a sit-down meeting. The meeting was to talk about the team’s defensive schemes and practice policies, the report said.
There was also another time, ESPN is reporting, that Karl nearly was fired in November after he had a public dispute with center DeMarcus Cousins.
The Kings are focusing their search on Kevin McHale, Mark Jackson, and Vinny Del Negro once Karl is fired. The team is also interested in Tom Thibodeau and Scotty Brooks, according to ESPN.
Whoever is hired to replace Karl will be their ninth head coach since the 2006-07 season. This is the most in the league.

Karl will receive $6.5 million in guaranteed money once he is fired. He was hired during the 2015 All-Star break after the Kings then replaced then interim head coach Tyrone Corbin.
“In the same sense, it’s moving in a good direction right now,” Karl said. “It’s the most wins [33] they’ve had in eight years. It’s an offensive team that’s very close to being a very good offensive basketball team. It’s a defensive team that’s better than people think it is. It does need some adjustments but can be adjusted very easily and I think very quickly in the summer.
“I think we’ve had a good year.”
