According to Yahoo Sports’ The Vertical, the Memphis Grizzlies fired head coach Dave Joerger on Saturday morning. The move is surprising, as he guided the team to the playoffs all three years he was their head coach.
This season, the Grizzlies were not the normal Grizz, as they had to use an NBA-high 28 players this season. Yet, Joerger guided the team to a 42-40 record in the regular season.
They ended the regular season with a 1-9 record in their final 10 games. Only the Brooklyn Nets had a worse record, as they lost the final 10 games, and the Philadelphia 76ers had that same mark as the Grizzlies and the Lakers went 2-8 over that span.

The difference is those teams were not as devastated with injuries as the Grizzlies.
That 42-40 mark resulted in a 7th-seed in the very tough Western Conference first-round playoffs. But the Grizzlies were swept by the San Antonio Spurs.
Jorrger was reportedly let go after he was seeking the team’s permission to interview with the Sacramento Kings. They’ve been pushing hard to get him — and now this move clears the way for him to go there.
The Kings have been looking for a head coach since Vlade Divac, their general manager, fired head coach George Karl after the season. Karl wasn’t a fit with the Kings this season, as they considered firing him on numerous occasions.
In Joerger’s three years with the Grizzlies, they went 147-99. The Kings are looking for their ninth head coach since Rick Adelman was let go in 2006.
Karl was 44-68 during his 112-game stretch with the team.

No Kings head coach has lasted more than 171 games during this time. That was Paul Westphal, who was the team’s head coach from 2009-2012, even though he went 51-120.
Every one of these coaches has had losing records during their Kings tenure.
With Joerger no longer there and moving on, the Grizzlies should consider Frank Vogel, who was let go from the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. He’s the hottest coaching name on the market right now.
