We’re about to see the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby on NBC. The race will officially start at 6:34 pm EST.

Last year, the betting favorite American Pharoah went on to win the race. A lot of people are also picking Nyquist, who is perfect, to win this year’s event.

While Nyquist is 7-for-7 and was named after a Detroit Red Wings player, we’re not going to go with the betting favorite to win the event. Some time, the horse will have to lose. Why not now?

While Nyquist is a 3-1 favorite on Mario Gutierrez, we’re going to go with Gun Runner ridden by Florent Gerouz. He’s considered the third favorite in the event.

Exaggerator ridden by Kent Desormeaux is the second-favorite. Desormeaux has previously won a Kentucky Derby in 1998, 2000 and 2008.

If Gun Runner wins, it’ll be a huge party at Churchill Downs. The Steve Asmussen trainee would snap a streak for Asmussen, who never won the race.

Victor Espinoza will likely have his two Kentucky Derby streak snapped in Saturday’s event. He won the event in 2014 and 2015, but is in the 10th spot with Whitmore, who is a 20-1 favorite.

He was on California Chrome and American Pharoah on his wins. Four jockeys have won back-to-back Kentucky Derby’s. However, no jockey has ever won three straight.

He also won the Derby in 2002 when he was on board War Emblem.

Besides winning the Derby, he’s also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2014, then also won the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. He’s won five Triple Crown races of the past six.
