There is a new UFC Heavyweight champion, as Stipé Miočić defeated Fabrício Werdum via a first-round knockout at UFC 198 from Brazil. After getting the win, Miočić was so excited that he went over the octagon and celebrated with his team.
According to ESPN’s Stats and Info, this is the fifth straight heavyweight fight that ended in a stoppage. Four of the wins were via knockouts, while the other was via stoppage.
Miočić improves to 15-2 with the win and he said months ago that he was going to win the belt. Now, it’s come true for the Cleveland, Ohio native.
“I want to thank the fans and you’re the ones that made this fight happen,” Miočić said.
The 33-year-old has won his third straight fight with the win via knockout (KO/TKO) — and both of the past two wins have come in the first-round. His fight against Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 65 in May 2015 went to the fifth-round.
He hasn’t lost since Junior dos Santos defeated him at UFC on Fox 13 via a unanimous decision in Dec. 2014.
He’s won six of his past seven fights since June 2013. Four of the six wins were by TKO or KO with two unanimous decisions.
The 38-year-old Werdum lost for the first-time since losing to Alistair Overeem in June 2011 when they both were in Strikeforce. He lost that fight via unanimous decision.
Werdum did win six straight fights before the loss on Sat. night.
