In a year where Martin Truex Jr. had several close calls on winning, he’s finally able to erase those memories and replace them with a win of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He won on racing’s biggest day, as Lewis Hamilton won the Monaco Grand Prix and rookie Alexander Rossi drank the milk at the Indianapolis 500.
The Coca-Cola 600 is NASCAR’s longest race of the season. It was the first win of the season for all three drivers.

“It feels good,” Truex Jr. said. “It’s hard to put it into words, obviously. Just really excited for my team. Really excited that Barney was here tonight. It’s the first time he’s been to — been at the racetrack when one of his cars has won, so that’s a big deal for all of us. Johnny Morris from Bass Pro was here tonight. We’ve been so close to winning for him this year, and for him to be here tonight, to get to victory lane in the 600 was amazing. Just all in all, the whole weekend was really one of them fairy-tale weekends where it seemed like we couldn’t do anything wrong, and Cole and the guys did a great job with the car obviously all weekend, and it just seemed like everything was going the way we needed it to do, and then we come down to the end of the race and we’re out there leading, and I’m like, all right, when is the caution going to come out, and it didn’t.

“So things went the way we needed them to. We had obviously a fast hot rod and just thankful for that, and thanks for all my guys for working so hard and bringing fast cars. It’s fun to drive them.
Truex Jr. dominated the race after leading a NASCAR-record 588 of 600 miles (392 of 400 laps). It’s his first win in May and the fourth overall in his career.
Before this evening, he previously won last June in Pocono.
Kevin Harvick, in his Chevrolet, finished in second. He was 2.572 seconds behind Truex Jr.
Jimmie Johnson was third, also in a Chevy. He was 4.590 seconds behind the New Jersey native, as well.
Johnson also led five laps. Joey Logano led one and Paul Menard also led two laps.
There were nine lead changes, and 38 out of the 40 cars finished the race. Kyle Busch was involved in an accident, while Reed Sorenson had engine trouble.
There were also four caution flags for 19 laps.
The race took 3 hours, 46 minutes, and 25 seconds. The average speed was 190.288 mph.
Truex Jr. was so close to getting the monkey off his back, but things didn’t go his way. He led 141 laps at Texas before finishing sixth after a poor pit strategy.
Then, in Kansas, he led 172 laps before his wheel came loose and he finished 14th. He was also inches away from winning the Daytona 500 to begin the season.

Last year at this same event, he led the most laps with 131. However, he fell to fifth after pitting late. Carl Edwards, the winner, stayed out and didn’t pit like Truex Jr. and four other cars.
“It’s good to have a driver that can get this kind of stuff done,” Owner Barney Visser said. ” I think Martin is as good as anybody out there right now, and that’s really fun to watch.”
