Karsten Smith signs with FC Edmonton

FC Edmonton has announced that they’ve signed 27-year-old center Karsten Smith. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Smith is a native of New York and joins the team in the North American Soccer League. He last played in four games with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the United Soccer League (USL) this season.

He also appeared in 11 games with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers last season. With the Strikers, he had 918 minutes.

“Karsten is a very experienced player,” head coach Colin Miller said. “He has played with Tomi Ameobi before and I spoke with Tomi about Karsten and he raved about how competitive he was and how he would be a very, very strong addition to our back four. He is also a left-sided center back.

“I spoke with Karsten and he is very excited about joining the club. We’re excited, he’s excited, and it’s a fresh face in the group. There are additional moves being made behind-the-scenes and we’re hopeful there could be a couple of additional announcements being made as early as next week.”

Smith joins the Eddies are their second signing in the past several weeks. They also previously added Shawn Nicklaw.

The Eddies have the best defensive unit, as they’ve only given up eight goals in 12 games. They play the Ottawa Fury FC today.
