With Nick Foles officially a free agent, as of a few hours ago, after being released by the Los Angeles Rams, he’s expected to take some time before signing with his new team. There’s likely going to be a limited market for him since he didn’t produce much in his one season with the Rams.
He started 11 games with the Rams during their final season in St. Louis. He went 190 of 337 for 2,052 with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Last off-season, the Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles traded quarterbacks. Sam Bradford went to the City of Brotherly Love, where they haven’t shown him much love either.
In Sept., he re-signed with the Rams for two-years, $25 million. That was before the Rams acquired the No. 1 overall pick to draft Jared Goff, whose expected to be the team’s starter in a few weeks.
There are two stops that stick out the most. He could sign with the New England Patriots or the Dallas Cowboys.
Let’s examine each:
New England Patriots
With Tim Brady suspended for the first four games of the season due to Deflategate, the Patriots are going with inexperienced Jimmy Garoppolo. Behind him, there will be first-year rookie Jacoby Brissett, who was drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Bill Belichick, whose the head coach and deaf to general manager, will definitely look to bring in a veteran for those four weeks until Brady returns. He wouldn’t want to have a rookie to back-up Garoppolo in case he goes down with an injury.
With Tony Romo back after having two collarbone injuries last season — and caused the Cowboys to have a bad season. They went 4-12 without Romo and spent much of last season with Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel as the signal-caller.
They really don’t have an experienced arm behind Romo in case he goes down with an injury again. That’s the Cowboys worst nightmare but it could definitely happen again as they were devastated by injuries last season.
Right now, they have Kellen Moore, who made his NFL debut last season, along with Dak Prescott, who was also drafted in April. Jameill Showers is also on the roster right now but may just be a training camp arm.
Also, Foles is a native Texan as he grew up in Austin, Texas.
