Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian ever, reportedly has two competitions left in his career. However, his American swimming teammate believes that Phelps may not be done.
Phelps has the 100-meter butterfly on Friday before closing out his career on Saturday night in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
“I guarantee he will be there,” Ryan Lochte said on NBC’s Today about Phelps competing in 2020. “I think so. So, Michael, I’ll see you in Tokyo.”

Lochte has competed in the last four Olympic Games. If Phelps competes in Tokyo after saying he wouldn’t, he would be 35 years old.
“That would be wonderful,” Debbie Phelps said. “I already have the race picked out.”
While Lochte and his mother are saying there’s a possibility, Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman is downplaying the chance, like Phelps. At this present moment, Phelps has 26 medals, including 22 gold medals.
“I just don’t see it happening,” Bowman said. “He’s in such a good place personally. He doesn’t need it.”

If Phelps does come out of retirement, it would not be the first-time. The 2012 London Games were reportedly going to be his final Olympics, but he announced two-years later that he would be coming out of retirement to compete again on the world stage.
“I think he will come back,” Lochte told The Telegraph in December 2012. “He’s still young. I think he will be back for Rio. We’ll see, he’ll miss the sport.”
