A short time ago, Michael Phelps was in a three-way tie for the silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle on Friday night. Yet, this isn’t the first time that something like this has happened in swimming.

A little over a year ago, a similar thing happened at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia. In the 200-meter breaststroke final, three swimmers won a bronze medal.

Phelps tied his two biggest rivals South African Chad le Clos and Hungarian László Cseh with the time of 51.14.

According to reports, this has happened before. They suggest that in a 200-meter breaststroke world championship race, there were three swimmers tied for third place and were all awarded bronze medals.

Phelps, le Clos, and Cesh are considered to be silver medals in this case. Singapore’s Joseph Schooling won the gold medal with a time of 50.39 seconds.

In the 2015 race, Japan’s Kanako Watanabe won the gold at the 26th FINA World Championship. Then, Spain’s Jessica Vall, Denmark’s Rikke Møller Pedersen, and Chinese’s Shǐ Jìnglín all came in third.

Watanabe won the race from the third lane. Vall was in the first lane, Pedersen was fourth and Shǐ was in the eighth lane.

Watanabe was 2:21.15, while American Micah Lawrence was 2:22.44. Pedersen, Vall and Shǐ all had 2:22.76.

While this may not happen for a long time, it is likely to happen again, especially since it has already happened several times.
