Big news has come out of the Texas Motorplex on Friday evening, as Troy Coughlin Jr. announced that he’ll be moving to Top Fuel. He’ll be competing for Kalitta Motorsports during the 2017 season.

He’ll be running on a limited schedule to start because of funding. He’ll be one of three Top Fuel drivers in their camp, as he’ll join J.R. Todd and Doug Kalitta. There will also be three Funny Car drivers with Alexis DeJoria, Paul Lee and reigning Funny Car Champion Del Worsham.

It’s also the first-time that Kalitta and Coughlin have teamed together.

“I am very excited to be competing in the Top Fuel class with Kalitta Motorsports,” he said. “Kalitta Motorsports has a lot of history and legacy in NHRA similar to my family. The first-time I came to Team Kalitta, I noticed the family-type atmosphere and the extreme desire to win and I knew this was the team I wanted to be involved with. I am studying hard and plan to hit the ground running and have a strong start to the 2017 NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing season.”

His uncle is Jeg Coughlin Jr., who races in Pro Stock with Elite Motorsports. His father Troy is the J&A Service Pro Mod Champion.

He’ll be the first in the Coughlin to race in Top Fuel since his grandfather, Jeg Coughlin Sr., who raced in the category in the late 1970s and 1980s. His uncles John and Mike also race and have won multiple championships.

Mike won several Division 3 championships — and Troy is the present Division 3 Super Comp division leader. Jeg is a five-time Pro Stock Champion. Overall, their family has a 111 NHRA national event wins, according to NHRA.com.

“Kalitta Motorsports is thrilled to have Troy Jr. join our team,” Jim Oberhofer, Vice President of Operations said. “He has a ton of talent and a passion for racing. The Coughlin and Kalitta names have a long track record of success in NHRA drag racing and we know Troy Jr. is just going to help continue that tradition of success for both families for years to come.”

According to the team, his sponsor and crew chief will be announced at a later date. His schedule will also be announced later.
