FIU Panthers senior tight end Jonnu Smith is out for the remainder of the season. He did not suffer an injury like others recently around the country that cost him his season.
Instead, he was reportedly burned by his girlfriend, who poured boiling water on him. According to ESPN, the burns cover multiple parts of his body.
Mary Gasper, according to The Miami Herald, the alleged suspect, has been charged with aggravated battery. She is also five months pregnant with their baby.
The arrest affidavit, which was obtained by The Miami Herald, says that Smith and Gasper had an argument over the amount of time that he was giving her in the past month. She allegedly boiled the pot of water while the two were in their dorm room, before pouring it on him.
After pouring the boiling water on him, she also hit him with her hands.
The four-year starter suffered burns on his head, neck, back, shoulder and arm, according to ESPN.
In 11 games during the 2016 season, he had 42 receptions for 506 yards and four touchdowns. He also had one carry for five yards.
In his four-year career with the Panthers, he had 178 receptions for 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also had one carry for five yards.
