Bears defeat VCU in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis

The No. 20 Baylor Bears have defeated the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Bears won 71-63 over the Rams at Imperial Arena in Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas. 

With the win, the Bears will wait for their next opponent. The Rams dropped to the loser’s bracket of the tournament.

With the win, the Bears improved to 4-0 on the season. The Rams suffered their first loss of the season, as they fell to 3-1.

The Rams led 36-28 at halftime. VCU had their largest lead of the game at halftime. Their first eight-point lead came with 10 seconds left in the half. 

However, their shooting fell off in the second half. They were shooting 58.3% from the field in the first half. Then, they shot 34.78% in the second half, as they went 8 of 23 from the field. 

They were also 2 of 9 from the three-point range. Yet, they went 9 of 11 from the free-throw line. 

In both halves, the Bears shot 40-plus percent from the field. They shot 42.86% from the field in the first half, as they went 9 of 21 from the field. The team was 0 of 3 from three-point range in the first half. 

Yet, in the second half, the team went 12 of 27 for 44.44% from the field. Baylor went 2 of 6 from three-point range in the second half. 

Johnathan Motley led the Bears with 19 points. He also had 10 rebounds, one assist, and one block.

Three Baylor players scored in double figures. Manu Lecomte scored 16 points while Al Freeman added 15 points. 

The Bears had 12 bench points. Terry Maston had eight bench points. 

JeQuan Lewis led the Rams with 21 points. He also had three rebounds, five assists, and three steals. 

Lewis was one of three VCU players, who scored in double digits. Ahmed Hamdy Mohamed had 14 and Jonathan Williams contributed 12 points. 

The Rams had 16 bench points. Samir Doughty had eight bench points.
