Bills request permission to interview Panthers DC Sean McDermott

The Buffalo Bills have seeked permission from the Carolina Panthers to interview their defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. The Buffalo Bills are looking to find their next head coach.

The Bills fired Rex Ryan before their season finale. Then, Anthony Lynn — who is a front-runner for the job — before they lost 30-10 to the New York Jets.

If he becomes the Bills head coach, it would be the first-time that he’s been a head coach in the National Football League.

McDermott has been the Panthers defensive coordinator since the 2011 season. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2009 and 2010.

From 1999 to 2010, he was with the Eagles. He was the team’s linebackers coach in 2008 and was their safeties coach in 2007.

In 2004 through 2006, he was the Eagles assistant defensive backs coach. From 2002 to 2003, he was the Eagles defensive assistant and quality control coach.

In 2001, he was the Eagles assistant to the head coach. He began his NFL career as the Eagles scouting administrative coordinator in 1999 and 2000.

McDermott began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the William & Mary Tribe in 1998.
