Blue Jays, Bautista nearing agreement

The Toronto Blue Jays are nearing an agreement with free agent outfielder José Bautista, according to MLB.com. The Cleveland Indians and the Baltimore Orioles have been mentioned as a landing spot for him.

However, while the Indians and the Orioles were in the mix, it was not expected that he would sign there. The Blue Jays have been considered the front-runner to keep him.

The deal between the two sides are expected to be completed soon. However, while they are close on a deal, no terms have leaked out yet even though he’s been asking for a multi-year deal.

The Blue Jays would keep a slugger in their lineup with this move after Edwin Encarnaciόn signed a multi-year deal before Christmas with the Indians.

This past season, he had a .234 batting average with 22 home runs and 69 RBI’s in a 116 games.

The 36-year-old has 265 home runs in 1,078 games with the team. Only Carlos Delgado has more, as he has 336 home runs.

He would take back the right field position that Ezequiel Carrera is listed as the starter.

Bautista has spent the past nine-years with the Blue Jays. He also played five years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, a year each with the Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays and the Orioles.
