The North Carolina Tar Heels are the first National Champion since Donald Trump became the 45th President in January. It is customary to have a champion to visit the White House.
However, after they defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 71-65, on Monday Night at the University of Phoenix Stadium, head coach Roy Williams – who guided his alma mater to their third national championship since 2005 – was noncommittal on going to visit Trump. While we know some players views, we do not know what every player thinks politically about Trump.
“Let me think on it,” he said. “Again, I don’t know if we’re going to get invited. I don’t.”

If they are not invited, it’s not the first time that a Williams team missed out on the opportunity. It also happened following the 2005 National Championship team, who he said they weren’t asked until September – months later.
Following their 2009 championship, the Tar Heels did visit then-President Barack Obama – who picked North Carolina to win this year’s bracket. When he was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in October 2016, he addressed the team, as he was campaigning for then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
“I probably screwed it up,” Williams said. “I should have told you I would think about it afterwards because I didn’t want to jinx myself.”
It appears that Williams may be a Democratic supporter, as he clashed with Trump’s comments when the team played in the ACC Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in March.

“You know, our president tweets out more bull—- than anybody I’ve ever seen,” he said.
Aaron Rohlman previously told Sports Illustrated that only “about three of the 15 Tar Heels voted for Trump.”
“The office of the presidency of the United States is the most fantastic place you can be,” Williams said. “I know one thing. We’re putting up a nice banner in the Smith Center that’s hard to get.”
