Many teams did not know what position — either safety or linebacker — to make Jabrill Peppers to play in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns are taking the gamble on the former Michigan Wolverines specialty player, who was drafted with the 25th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

This was the Browns second straight defensive pick in the first-round of the draft. With the No. 1 overall pick, the franchise drafted Myles Garrett, the stud pass rusher, who has been the consensus No. 1 overall pick for the past several months.

The Browns initially had the 12th overall pick. However, they traded the pick to the Houston Texans — who drafted Deshaun Watson — to accumulate more draft picks. They moved down to the 25th overall pick, where they drafted Peppers.

“They’re going to get 200% of me,” Peppers said in a conference call after his selection with Cleveland reporters. “I’m just so excited for the opportunity. I told myself if the opportunity came, not to (worry) and it came a little earlier than I expected. I’m just excited to lay it all on the line for my family and my team.”

Peppers is the Wolverines first player, who was drafted in the first-round of the NFL draft since Taylor Lewan in 2004 by the Tennessee Titans. He’s the second player, who was drafted in the first-round since the 2010 NFL Draft.

The Browns are expected to make Peppers a safety.

“I was filling the void playing linebacker and now I can go back to my natural habitat and where I’m most comfortable at,” he said. “I get to work at one position … I’m just excited, the sky’s the limit. We’re going to make big things happen. We’ve got (No. 1 pick) Myles Garrett, he’s going to be a terror up there and I’m going to be watching in the back end to hold it all together. I’m just excited for the future.”

In regards to the franchise’s second picks in the first round, many of them have turned out to be busts. The franchise drafted quarterback Brady Quinn in 2007, then quarterback Brandon Weeden in 2012.

Two years later, the Browns drafted quarterback Johnny Manziel in 2014. The team also drafted guard Cameron Erving in 2015.
