The New England Patriots are expected to give second-year cornerback Cyrus Jones a chance to handle the slot corner role. The team’s starting corners are Stephon Gilmore and Malcolm Butler.

Jones — who was the Patriots top pick during the 2016 NFL Draft in the second round out of Alabama — had a disaster, mistake-filled rookie season. But the team is looking past his performances during their Super Bowl winning season and willing to give him another shot.

While he made a lot of mistakes, he admitted he did not feel a part of the team. He struggled on defense and on special teams.

Jones will get more chances with Logan Ryan joining the Tennessee Titans. However, the team will not just give him a key role on their defense.

Jones will also have to compete with Justin Coleman and Eric Rowe for the slot role. Rowe will be entering his second season with the Patriots and Coleman is going into his third campaign with the team.

The 23-year-old had seven tackles on defense. He also had a 180 kickoff return yards and 46 punt return yards.
