ENGLISHTOWN, NJ — Matco Tools Top Fuel pilot Antron Brown — a Chesterfield, NJ native — has picked up the No. 1 qualifier at the 48th annual NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. He was able to keep the spot that he earned from the second pass on Friday night.
This is Brown’s first pole of the season. However, it is the 48th No. 1 qualifier of his racing career in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
“The track was better yesterday than everybody thought it was going to be,” Brown said. “We were shooting to be top-five in qualifying, and we went number one, which is crucial for race day. We’re back here in New Jersey, at Englishtown, every time I come to this track it brings back so many memories racing with my uncle [Andre] and my dad [Al].
“It’s like I remember being a kid sitting in the stands and thinking, ‘One day, I hope to be on this track and set some world records and win some races and hopefully, maybe, I could be on a team that can win a championship. The Good Lord has blessed me in so many different ways to win so many races and be a three-time champ and now to come home and qualify number one in front of my family and my friends.”
Capco Contractors pilot Steve Torrence — who won last year’s event here against Tony Schumacher — went 3.725 at 326.40 mph. Mac Tools pilot Doug Kalitta went 3.733 at 329.75 mph.
Shawn Langdon in his Global Electronic Technology dragster is the No. 4 qualifier with a 3.734 at 326.79 mph pass. Monster Energy dragster pilot Brittany Force is the No. 5 qualifier after she went 3.762 at 320.81 mph.
