Courtney Force was able to hold onto the top spot at the 38th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals on Saturday evening at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado. Force’s pass on Friday was good enough to pick up the No. 1 qualifier.
Her Advance Auto Parts Chevy Camaro set both-ends of the track record when she went 3.889 at 328.30 mph. This is her sixth No. 1 qualifier of the season.
“It feels great being in the No. 1 qualifying spot,” Force said. “It’s pretty impressive what my team can do in these difficult conditions. We are looking for a long race day (on Sunday) to pick up some points and climb up the standings a bit.”
She’ll face Jim Dunn Racing pilot Jim Campbell in the first-round of eliminations. He went 5.316 at 133.38 mph in his Dodge Charger.
Earlier this season, Campbell had Force’s number, as he eliminated her twice. Campbell won his first round at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., against John Force Racing President Robert Hight. That was Campbell’s first round win since defeating Force at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. in March.
Living Legend and 16-time World Champion John Force is the No. 2 qualifier. He went 3.899 at 301.87 mph in his Peak Performance Chevy Camaro. He’ll face two-time World Champion Matt Hagan on Sunday after he went 4.942 at 160.10 mph in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger.
“I think it’s pretty amazing that dad and I are 1 and 2,” she said. “I think it is really great for JFR. If you look at it last year, dad and I were in the final round. He took the win, and don’t think that’s not what I’m thinking about when we roll up for qualifying. I want to make sure he is not taking my top spot and that we hang on to it.”
Hight is the No. 3 qualifier in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevy Camaro. He went 3.905 at 318.17 mph and will face Todd Simpson in eliminations. He went 4.342 at 248.07 mph in his Dodge Charger.
Head Racing’s Jonnie Lindberg qualified fourth in his Toyota Camry after going 3.946 at 319.98 mph. He’ll face “The Surfer” Jeff Diehl in eliminations, as he went 4.252 at 301.40 mph in his Toyota Solara.
Reigning World Champion and Napa Auto Parts-backed Ron Capps rounded out the Top 5 with a 3.965 at 313.73 mph pass in his Dodge Charger R/T. He’ll face his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger following his 4.058 at 304.87 mph pass.
